How to run a laundromat absentee: what breaks and what to check

Updated 22 Oct 2026 · 6 min read

To run a laundromat absentee, check every outlet remotely each day, visit each one on a fixed weekly round, and settle every refund within a day. Self-service laundries fail in small ways nobody reports: a dryer that doesn't dry, an empty detergent tank, a jammed coin changer. In our library of 1,195 laundries and laundromats in Malaysia (October 2026), the median Google rating is 4.1, the lowest of the ten trades we track.

Laundries have the lowest ratings we track, and the slowest replies

41% of those laundries sit below 4.0. That compares with 18% of cafés and 9% of salons.

The reviews are harsher too. Of 26,940 laundry reviews published October 2024 to September 2026 in our library, 16.0% gave one star. At salons it was 5.7%, and at cafés 5.5%.

Owners replied to 39% of their one- and two-star reviews, and replies came a median of 4 days after the review. That is the slowest of the ten trades. A customer whose money is stuck in a machine will not wait four days.

The good news is that the causes are physical and fixable. They are machines, payments, soap, refunds and dirt, not taste or attitude.

What breaks when nobody is on site

  • Dryers that don't dry. A full cycle paid and the clothes still damp is the complaint we read most. Lint filters and blocked vents are the first things to check.
  • Washers that leak or stop mid-cycle. Customers name the machine number in reviews, so number every machine clearly.
  • Coin changers and payments. A jammed changer or offline QR payment stops every machine at once. Keep two ways to pay that work.
  • Empty detergent and softener. Customers pay for a wash and get no soap. Detergent, softener and the coin changer are among Google's review topics at the lowest-rated laundries we hold.
  • Slow refunds. A refund that takes weeks, or a hotline nobody answers, turns a small fault into a one-star review.
  • Dirt. Lint on the floor, full bins and a sticky folding table.
  • Safety at night. Laundries stay busy long after the shops around them close.

Check every outlet remotely in 10 minutes a day

  1. Takings by machine. A machine with no takings yesterday is probably broken. If your machines report to a central system, read its fault list first.
  2. The hotline. Answer every WhatsApp message the same day, with a refund or a fix date.
  3. The cameras. Look at each outlet at a busy hour and once late at night. Check the floor, the bins and any queue at one machine.
  4. Detergent and softener. Check the levels, or count refills against cycles run.
  5. New Google reviews for each outlet. A machine named twice is this week's job.

Highground does not watch your machines. It reads what customers write about each of your outlets and rivals, and tells you which outlet to fix. See it for laundries.

A weekly round that keeps each outlet working

Visit every outlet once a week, on the same day, with the same list.

  1. Run a short test on every washer and dryer. Feel that each dryer drum gets hot.
  2. Clean every lint filter and check the dryer vents.
  3. Refill detergent and softener, and check the dose on one wash.
  4. Empty the coin boxes and refill the changer. Pay once by QR to test it.
  5. Sweep, mop, empty the bins, and wipe the folding table and machine doors.
  6. Check the signs: price on every machine, the hotline number, refund steps, opening hours and the CCTV notice.
  7. Check the lights, the door, the alarm and the cameras.
  8. Log every fault with the machine number and date. Close it before the next round.

The laundromat visit checklist turns this into a list you can print and tick. Our free price list maker prints the price sticker for each machine.

Settle refunds within a day, and say so on the wall

Put the refund steps on a sticker at every machine. Ask for the machine number, the time and a photo of the payment by WhatsApp. Refund by e-wallet or bank transfer within a day.

Keep a refund log by machine. Three refunds on one machine in a week means fix the machine, not refund it again.

Reply to every review about a stuck payment, and say what you fixed. For what else drives customers away, read why laundry customers stop coming back.

Make the outlet safe at 2 a.m.

Your customers come late. Google's popular times for 40 laundries in our library (October 2026) put the busiest hour of the week at midnight going into Monday, with a score of 56.9 out of 100. Between midnight and 5 a.m., scores stay between 38.7 and 56.9, as busy as most weekday mornings.

  • Light the inside and the shopfront brightly, and keep the glass clear of posters.
  • Point cameras at the door and the payment machines, and put up a CCTV notice.
  • Show an emergency number and your hotline on the wall.
  • Empty the coin boxes often, so little cash sits there overnight.
  • Stay open 24 hours only if you can watch the cameras and answer the hotline at night.

Check the numbers before you add an outlet

An outlet you can't visit weekly is one you can't run absentee. Before you sign for another, read the reviews of the laundries on that street, and use the rating check to see where they stand. Check before you buy a franchise covers the rest, and laundry marketing ideas covers filling the machines.

Questions owners ask

How do you run a laundromat absentee?

Check every outlet remotely each day: takings by machine, the hotline, the cameras, stock and new reviews. Visit each one weekly with a fixed list. Settle refunds within a day.

How do I run a laundromat business with no staff?

Make the outlet explain itself: prices on every machine, refund steps, a hotline that answers, and numbered machines. Then run the daily remote check and the weekly round above. The faults that hurt most are dryers that don't dry and payments that fail.

How often should I visit my self-service laundry?

Once a week, on a fixed day, with the same list. Visit sooner when a machine shows no takings, a refund repeats on one machine, or a review names a fault twice.

How should an unmanned laundromat handle refunds?

Post the steps at every machine and ask for the machine number, the time and a photo of the payment. Refund by e-wallet or bank transfer within a day, and log refunds by machine to find the one to fix.

Is it safe to run a 24-hour laundromat?

It can be, if you light it well, cover the door and payment machines with cameras, empty the cash often and answer the hotline at night. Late hours are busy: in our library, midnight to 5 a.m. is as busy as most weekday mornings.

What we counted: 1,195 laundries and laundromats in Malaysia with 10 or more Google ratings, 26,940 of their reviews published October 2024 to September 2026, and Google's popular times for 40 of them, from public Google listings in our library on 22 October 2026.
