Laundromat customer complaints and why customers leave

Updated 22 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The most common laundromat customer complaints are a dryer that ends its cycle with clothes still damp, money lost to a machine with no quick refund, and nobody to call when it goes wrong. Most customers never tell you. They go to the next laundry down the row, or back to washing at home, and some leave one star first.

Laundries are the lowest-rated trade we count

In our library of 1,195 laundries and laundromats in Malaysia with 10 or more Google ratings (October 2026), the median rating is 4.1. That is the lowest of the ten trades we count, and 41% of laundries sit below 4.0.

Of 26,940 laundry reviews published from October 2024 to September 2026, 16.0% gave one star. In car service it was 4.0%.

Yet 75.5% of those laundry reviews still gave five stars, so an outlet's average moves slowly. A dryer can fail for weeks before the rating shows it. The reviews show it sooner, sometimes down to the machine number.

Read every one-star review as a fault report

With no staff on site, the customer who writes a review is often the first person to report a fault. Some low reviews name the dryer or washer by its number. Treat each one like a call to your hotline.

Owners tend to learn last. A broken machine that nobody reports keeps taking money until someone does. Put a large number on every machine, easy to read in a photo, so the reports you do get point somewhere.

A dryer that does not dry is the complaint that empties an outlet

The biggest theme in low laundry reviews is a full, paid dryer cycle that leaves clothes damp. The customer pays again, or carries wet clothes home, and does not come back.

Common causes are a full lint filter, a blocked exhaust duct, a weak heater or an overloaded drum. Clean lint filters on every visit. Test each dryer once a week with the same load, and feel the clothes at the end.

Time that round for the busy hours. In Google's popular times for 40 laundries in our library, the single busiest hour is midnight going into Monday, followed by Wednesday and Thursday at 7pm. Nobody is on site then. So stock detergent and softener, empty the coin boxes and check every dryer on Sunday afternoon.

Lost money with no refund turns one bad wash into a review

Payment failures come next. A QR payment that will not go through, a coin changer that keeps the money, a machine that takes payment and does not start. Then the refund takes weeks, or never comes.

The amount is small. The anger is not, because nobody answers. Low reviews describe hotlines that ring out and WhatsApp messages that are never answered.

Put one contact number on every machine and answer it within the hour during opening hours. Print the refund time on the same sticker, and keep to it. Empty detergent and softener dispensers also come up in low reviews, so check them on every visit.

Replying fast does not dry the clothes

Laundry owners reply more than most. Of those 26,940 reviews, they replied to 39% of the one- and two-star ones, against 23% for car washes and 30% for spas. Yet laundries still rate lowest, and their median reply took 4 days, the slowest of the ten trades.

A reply four days later does not refund the money or fix the dryer. Reply after the machine is fixed and the refund is paid, and say both. If the same machine number turns up again next month, the reply changed nothing.

Where they go instead

Switching costs a laundry customer nothing. The next laundry is often a few doors down, and some customers say so in their review. Others give up and wash at home.

You will not see them go. If your machines report takings, you see fewer cycles at one outlet. You also see a few one-star reviews that give the reason.

What to check at each outlet this week

  1. Read every one- and two-star review from the last six months, outlet by outlet. List each machine number they name.
  2. Run a timed test load in every dryer named. Clean the lint filter and check the exhaust duct.
  3. Pay with every method at each outlet yourself: coins, the changer, QR and the app.
  4. List refunds still waiting, with the date each was asked for. Pay the oldest this week.
  5. Call and WhatsApp your own hotline at 10pm. Time the answer.
  6. Check detergent and softener stock before Sunday night.

The laundromat visit checklist turns these into a printable round, and running a laundromat without staff covers the weekly routine. Highground reads what customers write about each of your outlets and your rivals, and tells you which outlet to fix first. It reads reviews, not machines, so it sits beside your machine reports. Questions owners ask

What are the most common laundromat customer complaints?

Dryers that leave clothes damp after a full cycle, payments that fail with slow refunds, and nobody answering the hotline. Empty detergent dispensers and dirty machines come up too. Some reviews name the exact machine.

How should I handle refunds at a self-service laundry?

Put one number on every machine, answer within the hour, and print the refund time on the sticker. Pay small refunds the same day. A slow refund turns a small loss into a one-star review.

How often should I check machines at an unmanned laundromat?

Clean lint filters and check dispensers on every visit. Test each dryer with a timed load once a week, before the Sunday night rush. Read new low reviews each week too, because they report faults your visits miss.

Why is my laundromat's Google rating so low?

Partly the trade. The median laundry in our library rates 4.1, the lowest of the ten trades we count. Check your outlets against that with the rating check, then read the low reviews of the weakest outlet for machine numbers.

Counted on 22 October 2026 from our library of places in Malaysia: 1,195 laundries and laundromats with 10 or more Google ratings, 26,940 of their reviews published October 2024 to September 2026, and popular times for 40 of them. The library holds places collected by topic, not every laundry in the country.
