How to increase business at a car workshop in Malaysia
The fastest way to grow a car workshop is to remove the moments when customers stop trusting you: a bill above the quote, a part changed without asking, and a car not ready when promised. Fix those, put your common prices on Google, and get ready for the service rush before Raya. In our library of 5,490 rated car service, tyre and battery places in Malaysia (October 2026), the median rating is 4.6 and 13% sit below 4.0, so trust is where workshops win or lose.
A few angry customers set your rating
Of 265,124 car service reviews published October 2024 to September 2026, 91.9% gave five stars and 4.0% gave one. Two, three and four stars together add up to another 4.0%. Customers either leave happy or leave angry.
So your rating depends on how often you make someone angry, not on your average job. In the low reviews we read, three stories repeat:
- The price on the phone or the quote was not the price on the bill.
- A part was changed without the customer's yes.
- The car was not ready at the promised time, and nobody called.
The first three ideas answer them. The rest bring in new cars.
A written quote is your cheapest marketing
Workshops must give customers a written statement before repair work starts. In 2024 a workshop in Raub was fined RM4,000 for not giving one (Carz, April 2024). The law aside, a written quote settles the argument at the counter before it reaches Google.
This week:
- Send every quote on WhatsApp before the car goes up, with parts and labour on separate lines.
- When you give a phone price for one job, such as an alignment, name what else it may need (balancing) and that price too.
- Agree a limit with the customer: you call before spending a ringgit above the quote.
Check it worked: each week, count bills higher than the quote with no WhatsApp yes behind them. The target is zero.
No new part without a yes
Customers who find a part replaced without asking feel misled, even when the old part was worn out. Some drive to a second workshop to check the work, or go back to the brand's service centre.
This week: make "photo, price, yes" the rule. The mechanic photographs the worn part. The counter sends the photo and price. Work waits for the reply. The old part goes in a labelled bag in the boot.
Check it worked: every replaced part on a bill has a matching WhatsApp yes, and arguments at the counter stop.
Promise a ready time you can keep, and message before it slips
A car two hours late costs the customer an afternoon. Late cars, and nobody calling about them, come up again and again in low workshop reviews.
This week:
- Give a ready time with 30 minutes of slack built in.
- If a job will run late, message the customer before the promised time with the new time and the reason.
- For long jobs, offer a lift to the nearest train station or mall.
Check it worked: write the share of cars ready on time on the workshop whiteboard each day. Watch it climb.
Put your common prices on Google
Customers phone around for prices because few workshops publish them. In our library, only 23 car service places show a Google price list (October 2026). The jobs they list most are oil changes (20 places), brakes (19), engine diagnostics (17) and batteries (15).
This week: list your five most common jobs on your Google profile with a "from" price and what it includes. Oil change by engine size, brake pads, battery fitting, alignment and tyre fitting cover most visits. Our free price list maker builds one in minutes.
Check it worked: count calls and walk-ins that mention seeing your prices online.
Book the pre-Raya service before Ramadan starts
Car service reviews written per day rose 10% in Ramadan 2025 (March) against February. In 2026, March, when Ramadan ended and Raya fell on the 20th, ran 8% above January. Reviews are a sign of visits, not a count of them, but the pattern fits the pre-Raya service: families get the car checked before the long drive home.
Ramadan 2027 starts around early February, so plan in January.
- Three weeks before Raya, send regulars a "service before you balik kampung" reminder with a booking link.
- Open bookings for the last two weekends before Raya, with a pre-trip check of tyres, brakes, wipers, battery and air-cond.
- Plan staff leave early. Your busiest weeks fall just before your mechanics want to go home too.
Check it worked: bookings in the four weeks before Raya against the same weeks last year.
Ask every customer for a review at handover
The middle workshop in our library has 32 Google ratings; the top quarter has at least 81 (5,490 places, October 2026). With few reviews, one angry customer moves your rating a long way. Reviews from ordinary good jobs keep it honest.
Ask every customer at the key handover, in the same words, with a QR code on the counter. Never offer anything in return: Google bans rewards for reviews (Google's policy).
Check it worked: new reviews a month, per branch.
Reply to the angry review with what you changed
Owners replied to 41% of car service reviews, but to only 29% of the one- and two-star ones, after a median of two days. A reply that says what you fixed (the bill, the part, the late car) shows the next reader that someone listens. A copy-paste apology does not.
A reply is still not a fix. When two branches get the same complaint, the cause is a habit, not a customer. Highground reads what customers write about each of your branches and your rivals, and tells you which branch to fix.
Walk each branch with the car workshop visit checklist, and read why car workshop customers stop coming back. More for your trade is on our page for workshop owners.
Questions owners ask
How can I increase business in my car workshop?
Stop losing the customers you have, then make it easy for new ones to choose you. Quote in writing, ask before any extra part, and keep your ready times. Then list your common prices on Google and remind regulars to service before Raya.
How do I get more customers to my car repair shop?
Publish prices for your five most common jobs on your Google profile, because customers compare before they call. Ask every customer for a review at handover, without any reward. Reply to low reviews with what you changed.
Do I have to give customers a written quote?
Yes. Workshops must give customers a written statement before repair work starts, and one in Raub was fined RM4,000 in 2024 for skipping it. A WhatsApp quote with parts and labour listed also stops disputes over the bill.
When is the busiest season for car servicing in Malaysia?
The weeks before Hari Raya. In our library, car service reviews written per day rose 10% in Ramadan 2025 against the month before. Plan bookings and staff leave from January.
What is a good Google rating for a car workshop?
In our library of 5,490 rated car service places (October 2026), the median is 4.6, the top quarter sits at 4.9 or higher, and 13% are below 4.0. Check yours with our free rating check, or read what a good Google rating is.
