Salon, barbershop and spa trends 2026 in Malaysia
In 2026, Malaysian customers search more for head spa (up 31%), lymphatic drainage massage (up 56%), Thai massage (up 18%), the textured crop (up 11%) and lash lifts. They search less for low fades, Korean perms, scalp treatments and mullets. Whatever you add, the best-rated salons and spas share one habit no trend replaces: they don't hard sell.
Each change compares Malaysian Google searches in April to September 2026 with the same months of 2025. Searches show what customers want. Google's review topics for 397 salons and 1,215 spas in our library (October 2026) show what the best-rated quarter gets talked about, against the lowest-rated.
Head spa is the new name for scalp treatment
Searches for head spa rose 31%, from 22,400 to 29,400, with the busiest month in July 2026. Over the same months, searches for scalp treatment fell 31%, from 19,500 to 13,400. Korean head spa (up 52%) and Japanese head spa (up 13%) grew from smaller bases.
Customers still want scalp care. They now look for it under a name that promises calm, a wash and a massage, not a clinical fix.
"Head spa" is a review topic at 5% of the best-rated spas (496 rated 4.9 or higher) and does not make the lowest-rated quarter's list. In salons, the old name shows the opposite pattern: "scalp treatment" is a topic at 14% of the lowest-rated salons and 10% of the best-rated.
This week. If you offer a scalp treatment, rewrite it as a head spa on your menu and in your Google service list. Describe what happens and for how long: the scalp check, the wash, the massage, the drying.
Lymphatic drainage is the fastest-rising massage search
Searches for lymphatic drainage massage rose 56%, from 17,600 to 27,400, with the busiest month in May 2026. "Lymphatic massage" is a topic at 4% of the best-rated spas and does not make the lowest-rated list.
Among 1,179 spas in our library with a Google price list, 41 list a facial lymphatic drainage, at a median of RM99.
Sell it as a gentle massage, with the steps and the minutes on the menu. Don't promise detox or weight loss. Clients who feel misled say so in their reviews.
Thai massage demand is up, but it is judged hard on technique
Searches for Thai massage rose 18%, from 206,000 to 243,000, with the busiest month in March 2026. Yet "Thai massage" is a topic at 20% of the lowest-rated spas and does not make the best-rated quarter's list.
Foot massage shows the same pattern: a topic at 39% of the lowest-rated spas and 11% of the best-rated. The lowest-rated quarter's topics also include pressure, strong massage and massage technique.
More demand means more first-time clients to win or lose. Before you promote Thai massage, check every therapist's pressure and technique, and make sure a 60-minute session lasts 60 minutes. Our spa marketing ideas cover what these clients judge.
Men's cuts are moving from low fades to textured crops
| Search | Apr to Sep 2025 | Apr to Sep 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| textured crop | 32,600 | 36,200 | +11% |
| taper fade | 120,900 | 112,700 | -7% |
| buzz cut | 297,000 | 243,000 | -18% |
| two block haircut | 92,100 | 75,800 | -18% |
| mullet haircut | 168,600 | 134,000 | -21% |
| Korean perm | 25,800 | 18,800 | -27% |
| low fade | 228,200 | 158,800 | -30% |
The low fade is still searched more than four times as often as the textured crop, so keep fades sharp. The textured crop is the cut gaining ground.
Korean perm searches fell 27%, and 28% for the men's version. Yet perms turn up more often in barbershop reviews each year in our reading. The novelty has passed and the service has stayed, so keep it on the menu with a clear price.
Men's haircut searches peak in the Raya month. "Gaya rambut lelaki" had its busiest month in March 2026 (18,100 searches, against an average of 12,050 a month), and so did low fade, taper fade, two block and textured crop.
This week. Make sure every barber can cut a textured crop, and add a good photo of one to your Google profile. Among 61 barbershops with a Google price list, the median scissor cut is RM19 (34 shops) and the median hot towel shave RM35 (21 shops).
Lash lifts hold while extensions slip
Searches for lash lift rose 5% (10,800 to 11,300) and brow lamination 10% (5,640 to 6,180). Eyelash extension searches fell 26% (34,800 to 25,800) and gel nails fell 54%. Keratin treatment fell 18% and balayage 17%.
Lifts and laminations work with the client's own lashes and brows. Among 515 salons with a Google price list, the median lash lift is RM150 (60 salons) and brow lamination RM180 (32), against RM118 for eyelash extensions (74).
At those medians, a lash lift earns more per visit than an extension set. Train one beautician per outlet before you list it.
No hard selling is what the best salons and spas get named for
"No hard selling" is a review topic at 25% of the best-rated salons (213 rated 4.9 or higher) and 6% of the lowest-rated (101 at 4.6 or lower). "No hard sell" adds another 11% against 3%. Among spas, "no hard selling" sits at 9% of the best-rated and 3% of the lowest-rated.
"Skin analysis" (9% against 3%) and "clear explanations" (7% of the best-rated salons) point the same way. Clients reward being told what they need, then being left to choose.
Add each trend as a choice on the menu, with a price and an explanation. Never push it as a package while the client lies on the bed. Our salon marketing ideas show how the best-rated salons explain instead.
Try a new service at one outlet for six weeks
- Train two staff at one outlet before you list anything.
- List it on Google with the time it takes and the price.
- Book trial slots in quiet hours. Among 901 spas with Google's popular times, 10:00 scores about 31 out of 100, against 52.8 at Tuesday 18:00, the busiest hour. Salons peak on Thursday at 15:00 (58.4, from 113 salons).
- Count bookings and repeat bookings each week.
- Read that outlet's reviews every Monday for the service by name, and for any sign of pressure to buy.
- Roll out, change or drop it after six weeks.
If you run several outlets, Highground reads what clients write about each one and about your rivals, and shows which outlet to fix and what is changing. See how it works for salons, spas and barbershops.

Searches for "trend rambut lelaki" rose 12%, and "rambut lelaki 2026" drew 1,750 searches in April to September 2026. Among the cuts, the textured crop is rising and the low fade, mullet, two block and Korean perm are falling.
Is head spa worth adding to my salon or spa?

Which beauty services are losing demand in Malaysia?
Gel nails (down 54%), eyelash extensions (down 26%), Korean perms (down 27%), scalp treatment under that name (down 31%) and low fades (down 30%). Falling searches don't mean you should drop a service that sells. They mean you shouldn't build your next promotion around it.
