Salon visit checklist for owners and area managers (free)
This salon checklist for managers covers one salon in about 20 minutes plus a service: read its reviews, book and sit through a service as a client, then talk to the branch manager. Use it when one salon's reviews slip, when a senior stylist leaves, or on your regular round. Print it and tick it at the counter.

- Check the stylist agrees the length and style before cutting, showing it on the hair.
- For colour, check the stylist explains the result, the time and the full price first.
- Check the wash: water temperature asked, clean towel, no water down the neck.
- Note any push to buy a package, treatment or product you did not ask for.

Staff: your best stylists carry the regulars
When a favourite stylist moves outlet or leaves, regulars often follow. See when your best stylist leaves.
- Ask the manager which stylists carry the most regulars, and who covers when they are off.
- Ask which stylists joined in the last three months, and who checks their work.
- Check staff greet each client and say goodbye.
- Check no one asks for five stars or offers a gift for a review (Google bans rewards for reviews).
Prices and the bill match what the client was told
- Check the bill matches the price list and the stylist level you were told.
- Check every extra (treatment, long-hair charge, toner) was offered with its price first.
- Check the counter price list matches Google's.
- Ask how package sessions are recorded, and whether they work at your other salons.
Close the visit with the branch manager
- Ask how a client unhappy with a cut or colour gets it fixed, and how fast.
- Ask for the last three complaints, and compare them with the reviews.
- Agree three things to fix before you leave.
After the visit
Write the three fixes down with a name and a date beside each. Come back in two weeks and book the same service with a different stylist. If hard selling or billing shows up at a second salon, look at the sales targets, not just one team.
The branch visit checklist explains the method for every trade, and how to retain salon clients shows why they leave. The free price list maker keeps every salon's prices the same. For how we read every salon's reviews, see salon chains.
Questions owners ask
What should be on a salon checklist for managers?
The checks clients complain about: a higher stylist level charged without warning, package pushing, a cut shorter than asked, and a bill that differs from the price list. Add the salon's own repeat complaints from its last 30 Google reviews. The list above takes about 20 minutes plus the service.
How do I stop hard selling at my salons?
Watch for it on the visit, and read reviews for it each week. Then look at how staff are paid, because targets on packages can push staff to sell hard. Agree one rule for every salon, such as offering a package once, after the service.
How do I know which salon to visit first?
Pick the salon whose recent reviews repeat a complaint, or whose last 30 reviews give fewer stars than its overall rating. Highground reads what customers write about each of your outlets and rivals, and tells you which outlet to fix.
