Café menu ideas for 2026: what to add and what to drop
For 2026, add strawberry matcha, sourdough or mochi to your café menu: Malaysian searches for all three rose over the past year. Go easy on new tiramisu, Dubai chocolate and viral pastry specials, whose searches fell. Keep the matcha you already make well, because it is still what the best-rated cafés get named for.
Two sources sit behind each idea. Malaysian Google searches show what customers want, comparing April to September 2026 with the same months of 2025. Google's review topics for 672 cafés in our library (October 2026) show what the best-rated quarter gets talked about, against the lowest-rated quarter.
Strawberry matcha more than doubled while plain matcha latte faded
Searches for strawberry matcha rose 127%, from 36,200 in April to September 2025 to 82,100 in the same months of 2026. Over the same period, searches for matcha latte fell 36% (64,200 to 41,100) and iced matcha latte fell 41%.
Customers have not tired of matcha. They want it with something new.
Among 369 cafés in our library with a Google price list (October 2026), 16 list a matcha strawberry latte, at a median of RM15.20. The median plain matcha latte is RM14 (63 cafés).
This week. Write a strawberry matcha recipe card with every part by weight: matcha, strawberry base, milk and ice. Make ten cups and taste them side by side with your team before anyone sells one.
Matcha still marks the best-rated cafés
"Matcha" is a Google review topic at 16% of the best-rated cafés in our library (226 cafés rated 4.7 or higher) and 7% of the lowest-rated (175 at 4.1 or lower). "Strawberry matcha" shows up at 4% of the best-rated quarter and does not make the lowest-rated quarter's list.
Searches for matcha itself fell 21%, from 235,300 to 186,600. The crowd chasing a trend is thinning, yet reviews still name matcha at the best-rated cafés more than twice as often as at the lowest-rated.
So keep matcha if yours is good. Don't add a matcha range now just to follow last year's crowd.
Sourdough and mochi are the bakes on the way up
Searches for sourdough rose 46%, from 95,400 to 138,900, with the busiest month in July 2026. Mochi rose 32%, from 73,100 to 96,800, and had its busiest month in September 2026. Bagel searches rose 15%.
Reviews show no edge for them yet. "Sourdough" is a topic at about 2% of both the best-rated and the lowest-rated cafés, and mochi makes neither list. They are an open lane, not a proven draw.
Sourdough suits a café that already toasts or bakes: a sourdough toast, a sandwich or a loaf to take home. Mochi suits a dessert counter and sits well beside a matcha drink.
This week. Pick the one that fits your kitchen and your oven. Ask your supplier for a trial batch, not a contract.
Viral pastries fade within a year
Searches for cromboloni fell 47% (20,900 to 11,100), croffle fell 23% and salted egg croissant fell 32%. Dubai chocolate fell 14% in English and 59% under its Malay name, coklat dubai.
Even plain croissant searches fell 18%. "Croissant" is a review topic at 5% of the best-rated cafés and 6% of the lowest-rated, so it is a staple, not a reason to choose you.
Keep a good butter croissant: the median is RM6.90 across 20 cafés that list one. Retire the viral spin-offs when they stop selling, and don't launch new ones now.
Tiramisu searches halved, but the best-rated cafés still get named for it
Searches for tiramisu fell 54%, from 187,200 to 86,100. Yet "tiramisu" is a review topic at 8% of the best-rated cafés against 3% of the lowest-rated.
The same lesson holds for every item. A trend brings people in once. A version worth naming brings them back.
If your tiramisu is already a reason people come, keep it. If you were about to add one because it was everywhere last year, add something rising instead.
A new item sells when the barista can explain it
"Friendly staff" is the most common topic at both ends: 20% of the best-rated cafés and 15% of the lowest-rated. "Friendly barista" shows a wider gap, at 8% against 3%.
A new drink needs someone behind the counter who can say what it tastes like. Give every barista one plain sentence for each new item before launch day, and let them taste it first.
Test a new item at one outlet for four weeks
- Pick one outlet with steady weekday trade and a manager who follows recipe cards.
- Launch midweek. Among 418 cafés with Google's popular times, Saturday 14:00 is the busiest hour of the week (56.5 out of 100). Monday to Thursday evenings at 19:00 score about 40. Staff learn a new drink faster when the room is calm.
- Price it in public. Put it on Google and the counter board the same day. Our price list maker builds the list.
- Count three things each week. Cups or pieces sold per day, the item's share of daily sales, and how many customers order it a second time.
- Read that outlet's new Google reviews every Monday. Look for the item by name, and for complaints about waiting, which a fiddly new drink can cause.
- Compare it with your other outlets. If waiting complaints rose only at the test outlet, fix the workflow before you roll out.
- Decide after four weeks. Roll it out, change the recipe and test again, or drop it.
If you run several outlets, Highground reads what customers write about each one and about your rivals, and shows which outlet to fix and what is changing. See how it works for cafés.
Questions owners ask
What are good menu ideas for a cafe in 2026?
Start with what Malaysian searches show rising: strawberry matcha (up 127% in April to September 2026 against 2025), sourdough (up 46%) and mochi (up 32%). Add one at a time, at one outlet, and keep the signature items your customers already name. For what customers praise beyond the menu, read our café marketing ideas.
What are trending drinks to sell in Malaysia right now?
Strawberry matcha leads. Smaller searches are climbing fast from a low base: dirty soda (1,340 searches in April to September 2026, up from 280), sugar-free drinks (up 78%) and oat milk latte (up 30%). Spanish latte held steady (up 3%), while iced latte fell 30%.
Should I drop tiramisu or Dubai chocolate from my menu?
Check your own sales first, not the searches. If an item still sells and customers name it in reviews, keep it. If it sold only while it was viral, take it off the counter board and stop stocking its ingredients.
Idea menu cafe: what should a new café start with?
A short menu done well: one signature coffee, one matcha drink, one rising item and a good croissant. A short menu keeps the queue moving while staff learn. Our Malay guide on promoting a new café covers the opening month.
How do I know if a new menu item is working?
Count repeat orders, not first orders. Then read the test outlet's reviews for the item and for slower service. If regulars drift away after a menu change, our guide on why café customers stop coming back lists what to check.
Counted on 22 October 2026 from our library of public Google Maps data for Malaysia: Google's review topics for 672 cafés, price lists for 369 and popular times for 418. Search figures are Google Ads monthly searches in Malaysia, April to September 2026 against April to September 2025.
