Restaurant menu ideas for 2026 from Malaysian diners

Updated 22 Oct 2026 · 6 min read

Before you add a dish, fix what Malaysian diners judge every plate on: the sambal, the portion and the price. Then add one dish that searches show rising and your kitchen can cook well, such as Korean fried chicken, a smash burger, a mala dish or sourdough. Launch it midweek at one outlet, never on a Saturday night.

The ideas come from Google's review topics for 1,527 restaurants in our library (October 2026), comparing the best-rated quarter (471 rated 4.6 or higher) with the lowest-rated (462 at 4.0 or lower). We added Google price lists from 910 restaurants, popular times from 1,097, and Malaysian Google searches for April to September 2026 against the same months of 2025.

Sambal and portion size are judged at every restaurant

"Portion size" is a Google review topic at 8% of the best-rated restaurants and 7% of the lowest-rated. "Sambal" sits at 7% in both. Diners talk about them whether you are good or poor, so every new dish will be judged on the same two things.

Fix the plates you already serve before you add one. Use one rice scoop and one sambal ladle at every outlet. Taste each outlet's sambal in the same week, side by side.

A staple needs one thing that is yours

Malaysians searched for nasi lemak about 92,625 times a month over the 12 months to September 2026, the most of any dish we track. Searches held almost level, down 3% in April to September 2026 against 2025.

"Nasi lemak" is a topic at 12% of the lowest-rated restaurants, double the 6% at the best-rated. Chicken rice, satay and roti canai (4% each) also make the lowest-rated quarter's list but not the best-rated one's. A dish everyone knows invites comparison with every other plate the diner has eaten.

So each staple on your menu needs one thing you can name: a house sambal, a crispier chicken, a fresher fish. If you can't name it, cut the staple down or cut it out, and spend the effort on a dish you do better.

Five dishes Malaysians searched for more this year

sourdough95,400138,900+46%
Korean fried chicken18,10020,200+12%
smash burger30,40033,600+11%
mala59,40063,800+7%
omakase102,000105,300+3%

Korean fried chicken and the smash burger need little more than a fryer or a flat grill. Both work as takeaway, and both rest on a recipe you can keep the same at every outlet.

Mala searches grew 7%, but mala hotpot searches fell 26% (18,800 to 13,900). Add mala to dishes diners already order, such as fried rice, noodles or chicken, before you invest in a hotpot set-up.

Omakase is large and steady, but it needs skilled chefs and a booking system. It is a concept, not a menu add. Sourdough fits brunch and western menus as toast, sandwiches or a side for soup.

Butter chicken, salted egg and tomyam are cooling

Over the same months, searches for butter chicken fell 19% (32,400 to 26,400), salted egg chicken fell 18% (6,600 to 5,400) and tomyam fell 13% (186,600 to 162,600). Korean BBQ fell 7%.

These dishes still sell, and a falling search is no reason to drop one that earns its place. It is a reason not to launch one now. If you were about to add a salted egg range, add a rising dish instead.

Price a new dish against what diners already pay

"Price" is a topic at 15% of the lowest-rated restaurants, against 6% of the best-rated. It is the loudest topic in the lowest-rated quarter.

Among 910 restaurants with a Google price list (October 2026), the median nasi goreng kampung is RM10.50 (55 restaurants), nasi goreng ayam RM13 (38) and mee goreng RM9.90 (32). The median teh tarik is RM4.50 (56) and French fries RM10.25 (67).

A new dish can cost more than a staple. Diners just need a reason they can see: a bigger portion, a better cut, a sauce made in-house. The best-rated quarter's topics name dishes such as lamb shank (3%) and wagyu (2.5%), plus "fresh ingredients" (2.5%). None of them makes the lowest-rated quarter's list.

Show the new price on Google the day the dish launches. Our price list maker builds the list, and our guide to price increase notices helps when existing prices move too.

Launch on a weekday, never on a Saturday night

In 1,097 restaurants with Google's popular times, Saturday 19:00 is the busiest hour (63.2 out of 100), followed by Saturday 20:00 (62.9) and Sunday 19:00 (60.3). From Monday to Thursday, 16:00 scores about 36.

A new dish slows a kitchen until the cooks know it. "Queue" and "waiting time" are topics at 3% of the lowest-rated restaurants and don't make the best-rated quarter's list.

  1. Pick one outlet with a head cook who follows a recipe card.
  2. Train on a quiet afternoon. Cook it ten times between 15:00 and 17:00 from Monday to Thursday, and time each plate.
  3. Launch on a Tuesday or Wednesday. By Saturday the kitchen knows it.
  4. Count orders and repeat orders each week for four weeks.
  5. Read the outlet's new Google reviews every Monday. Look for the dish by name, and for waiting complaints the dish may cause.
  6. Roll out, change or drop it after four weeks. Then check each new outlet with the area manager checklist.

If you run several outlets, Highground reads what diners write about each one and about your rivals, and shows which outlet to fix and what is changing. See how it works for cafés and restaurants.

Questions owners ask

What are good menu ideas for a restaurant in Malaysia?

Start with the plates you have: one sambal recipe, one portion size and clear prices at every outlet. Then add one dish Malaysian searches show rising, such as Korean fried chicken (up 12% in April to September 2026 against 2025) or a smash burger (up 11%). For ways to tell diners about it, see our restaurant marketing ideas.

Sourdough rose fastest among the dishes we track, up 46%. Korean fried chicken, smash burgers and mala also grew. Salted egg chicken, butter chicken, tomyam and mala hotpot fell.

How do I price a new dish?

Start from what diners already pay for similar plates. Among 910 restaurants with a Google price list, the median nasi goreng ayam is RM13. Price above that only when diners can see why, and put the price on Google before launch.

Should I add a special menu for Ramadan?

Yes, but plan it as a set, not a discount. In our library, restaurant reviews per day fell 20% in Ramadan 2025 against February, then rose after Raya. See our Ramadan and Raya promotion ideas.

Why are diners not coming back after a menu change?

Check the outlet that changed first. Read its reviews for slower service, smaller portions or a sambal that tastes different. Our guide on why restaurant customers stop coming back lists what to look for.
