Price increase notice: 6 templates that keep your regulars
A price increase notice should go up two to four weeks before the new prices start. It gives one honest reason in a line, shows the old and new price, and says what stays the same. Put it at the counter, on your Google profile and on WhatsApp, so no regular meets the new price for the first time on the bill.
Customers forgive a price rise, not a surprise on the bill
Regulars know costs go up. Their rent, electricity and groceries go up too. What they punish is finding out at the till.
Price comes up more at low-rated places. Among 1,527 restaurants with Google's review topics in our library (October 2026), "price" is a topic at 15% of the lowest-rated quarter (462 places) and 6% of the best-rated quarter (471 places). Among 672 cafés, it is 10% against 4%.
When we read one- and two-star reviews across trades, one story repeats. The bill came to more than the price quoted. We saw it at salons, car workshops, dental clinics and preschools. The cure is the same everywhere: say the price before the work starts.
Give two to four weeks' notice, and a month for members
Two to four weeks means a weekly regular sees the notice several times, and a monthly one sees it at least once.
- Pick the date first. The 1st of the month or a Monday is easy for staff and customers to remember.
- Post it everywhere on the same day. Counter, menu board, door, a Google profile update, WhatsApp broadcast and Instagram.
- Give members and package holders a month. Tell them a month before renewal. Never charge extra on a package already paid for.
- Brief staff before customers see it. Give every outlet the same one-line reason and date, so they all answer the same way.
One honest reason, in one line
Customers want to know it is not greed. One line shows that. A paragraph sounds like an excuse.
Use the true reason: rent, electricity, ingredients, imported products or staff pay. Pick the biggest and say it plainly.
Leave out blame. Don't blame the government, a supplier or "the economy". Don't apologise three times. Say thank you once.
Name what stays the same
A rise feels smaller next to what did not change. Say it in the notice.
- The same portion, the same beans, the same colour brand.
- The same stylist, barber or therapist.
- Free things that stay free: parking, wifi, detergent, the hot towel.
- One favourite at the old price, such as the house coffee or a basic cut.
That last one matters. It gives price-watchers a reason to stay, while everyone else pays the new price for what they came for.
Show the new price wherever customers decide
A notice on the wall is not enough. On the first day, the new price must be everywhere a customer reads a price.
- Menu, price list and the board outside.
- The menu or services list on your Google profile. In our library, 910 restaurants and 515 salons list prices there (October 2026).
- Booking apps, delivery apps and QR menus.
- The sticker on each laundry machine and the package board at a car wash.
Then quote before you start. Senior stylist rates, long-hair charges and add-ons belong on the list, and staff should say them before the work begins. If tax or a service charge applies, print it beside the prices, not only on the receipt.
Our free price list maker prints a clean list for each outlet.
Six notices to copy: dated, short, old price shown
Change the brackets and sign it from the owner or the outlet team. The free price rise notice maker writes yours in English and Malay and prints it. Malay examples are in notis kenaikan harga.
Old prices without brackets are medians from Google price lists in our library (October 2026). A latte, for example, is RM12 across 63 cafés, a scissor cut RM19 across 34 barbershops and a blow dry RM35 across 70 salons.

Hi [name], a quick note from [shop name]. From 1 December, some of our prices go up by RM1 to RM3 because our rent and costs have risen. Your usual [kopi O / basic cut] stays the same price. The full list is at the counter and on our Google page. Thank you for coming back to us all these years.
On Instagram, use the same words as the caption with a photo of the new price list. Pin the post until the new prices start.
Read your reviews for a month after the change
The first month shows whether the rise landed. Read each outlet's new reviews for "price", "expensive" and "mahal". An outlet that charges differently from the rest will show up there first.
Reply to price complaints once, with the reason and what stayed the same. If one outlet gets most of them, check its boards and its till.
Highground reads what customers write about each of your outlets and rivals, and tells you which outlet to fix. See it for cafés and restaurants or salons. For what makes regulars leave, read why restaurant customers stop coming back and how to retain salon clients.
Questions owners ask
How much notice should I give for a price increase?
Two to four weeks for walk-in customers. A month before renewal for members and anyone on a prepaid package. Post it at every outlet on the same day.
How do I raise prices without losing customers?
Tell them early, give one honest reason and say what stays the same. Keep one favourite at the old price. Put the new price on every board and list, so nobody finds it first on the bill.
What should a price increase notice for a salon say?
The date, the services that change with old and new prices, one reason, and what stays the same: the stylist, the products and paid packages. Add that senior stylist rates are on the list and quoted before you start. The salon notice above is ready to copy.
Should I explain why prices are going up?
Yes, in one line. A true, simple reason such as rent or ingredient costs is enough. A long explanation reads as an excuse.
