Barbershop visit checklist for owners and area managers (free)

Updated 22 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

This barbershop checklist covers one outlet in about 20 minutes: read its reviews before you go, watch two cuts as a customer, then talk to the supervisor. Use it when an outlet's reviews turn, when new barbers join, or on your monthly round. Print it and tick it on the spot.

Before you go: read what this outlet's reviews say

In our library of 1,489 barbershops in Malaysia with 10 or more Google ratings (October 2026), the median rating is 4.6 and 15% sit below 4.0. Of their 112,467 Google reviews published October 2024 to September 2026, 92.5% gave five stars and 4.9% gave one star. The stars barely move, so read the words. See what counts as a good Google rating for the trade's spread.

  • Sort the outlet's Google reviews by newest and read the last 30.
  • Note repeat complaints: the wrong fade, a rushed cut, a long wait, the price.
  • Note any barber the reviews name, for good or bad.
  • Check the hours, phone and price list on Google against the shop.
  • Compare the outlet with your others in the free rating check.

Arrive like a customer, on a busy evening

Google's popular times for 45 barbershops in our library (October 2026) peak on Friday at 7pm, with weekday evenings from 6pm close behind. The queue tests the shop then.

  • Walk in on a weekday evening between 6pm and 8pm, without saying who you are.
  • Time how long it takes for someone to greet you.
  • Ask how long the wait is, then time it.
  • Check walk-ins and bookings are served in the order promised.
  • Once a month, arrive at the opening time on Google and check the door is open.

The cut should match what the customer asked for

A fade cut higher than asked, or a cut finished in a rush, sends customers to a cheaper barber nearby or to a second barber to fix it.

  • Check the barber confirms the style, the length and the fade height before starting.
  • Check the barber shows the back and sides in a mirror before finishing.
  • Note any barber who looks at a phone during a cut.
  • Time one standard cut against the time your outlets agree on.
  • Watch a newer barber's cut, and ask who checks it before the customer leaves.
  • Check every shave uses a new blade and a fresh towel.

Clean the station between every customer

  • Check hair is swept from the floor and the chair after each cut.
  • Check clippers, combs and guards are cleaned between customers.
  • Check each customer gets a clean cape or neck strip.
  • Check the wash basin, mirrors and waiting seats.
  • Check the toilet and the bins.

Staff: regulars follow a barber, not a shop

When a favourite barber leaves or moves outlet, regulars often go too, and say so in a review.

  • Ask the supervisor which barbers carry the most regulars, and who covers when they are off.
  • Ask which barbers joined in the last three months, and who trained them.
  • Check staff greet each customer and thank them on the way out.
  • Note how staff behave when no one is watching: chatting, phones, music volume.
  • Check no one asks for five stars or offers a gift for a review (Google bans rewards for reviews).

Prices and the bill match the wall

  • Check the bill matches the price list on the wall and on Google.
  • Check extras (wash, styling, beard) are offered with their price before they are done.
  • Check card and QR payment work.

Close the visit with the supervisor

  • Ask for the last three complaints, and compare them with the reviews.
  • Ask what slows the outlet down on its busiest evening.
  • Agree three things to fix before you leave.

After the visit

Write the three fixes down with a name and a date beside each. Come back in two weeks, on the same busy evening, and read the reviews written since. If a complaint shows up at a second outlet too, it is a training gap, not one barber.

The branch visit checklist explains the method for every trade. Why barbershop customers stop coming back shows where the lost ones go. For how we read every outlet's reviews, see barbershop chains.

Questions owners ask

What should be on a barbershop checklist?

The checks that match what customers complain about: the cut they asked for, the wait they were told, a clean station and a bill that matches the wall. Add the outlet's own repeat complaints from its last 30 Google reviews. The list above holds 32 checks for one 20-minute visit.

How do I check barbers' work when I am not at the outlet?

Read each outlet's reviews every week. Customers often name the barber and say what went wrong with the cut. Highground reads what customers write about each of your outlets and rivals, and tells you which outlet to fix.

How often should I visit each outlet?

Once a month at each outlet, and within a week when its reviews repeat a complaint. Come back two weeks after each visit to check the three fixes. Go sooner when several new barbers start at once.
